Seasonal and inter-annual variability of lower stratospheric age of air spectra

چکیده
Abstract. Trace gas transport in the lower stratosphere is investigated by analysing seasonal and inter-annual variations of the age of air spectrum – the probability distribution of stratospheric transit times. Age spectra are obtained using the Lagrangian transport model CLaMS driven by ERA-Interim winds and total diabatic heating rates, and using a time-evolving boundary-impulse-response (BIER) method based on multiple tracer pulses. Seasonal age spectra show large deviations from an idealized stationary uni-modal shape. Multiple modes emerge in the spectrum throughout the stratosphere, strongest at high 5

Interactive comment on “Characteristics of lower stratospheric transport as inferred from the age of air spectrum” by F. Ploeger and T. Birner
This manuscript presents calculations of the seasonal and inter annual variations in the stratospheric age spectrum obtained from the CLaMS model driven by ERA-Interim winds. The manuscript contains some interesting and new results that certainly warrant publication. However, the manuscript is not very well focused, does a poor job of discussing previous studies, and some of the major conclusio...

متن کاملLong-term spatial and temporal variability of ambient carbon monoxide in Urmia, Iran
One of the pillars of epidemiologic research on the long-term health effects of air pollution is to estimate the chronic exposures over space and time. In this study, we aimed to measure the intra-urban ambient carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations within Urmia city in Iran, and to build a model within the geographic information system (GIS) to estimate the annual and seasonal means anywhere with...
متن کاملExploring causes of interannual variability in the seasonal cycles of tropospheric nitrous oxide
Seasonal cycles in the mixing ratios of tropospheric nitrous oxide (N2O) are derived by detrending longterm measurements made at sites across four global surface monitoring networks. The detrended monthly data display large interannual variability, which at some sites challenges the concept of a “mean” seasonal cycle. In the Northern Hemisphere, correlations between polar winter lower stratosph...
متن کاملNitrous oxide (N2O) isotopic composition in the troposphere: instrumentation, observations at Mace Head, Ireland, and regional modeling
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a significant greenhouse gas and main contributor to stratospheric ozone destruction. Surface measurements of N2O mole fractions have been used to attribute source and sink strengths, but large uncertainties remain. Stable isotopic ratios of N2O (here considered NNO, NNO, NNO, relative to the abundant NNO) linked to source and sink isotopic signatures can provide addition...
